In IST 520, Learning Theories, we studied both descriptive and prescriptive learning theories. At first I was not clear on the distinction between the two; a descriptive theory is in some ways a broad look at how and why learning happens, where a prescriptive theory focuses on how to go about designing learning outcomes.
Our learning included many easily fields of learning theory, including Behavioral, Cognitive, and Constructivist theory to name a few. In addition we were exposed to a number of useful perspectives on learning through the lense of gender, spirituality, socioeconomics, and other elements related to adult learning.
We were asked to research specific learning theories to support our capstone project. I found myself drawn to Albert Bandura’s Social Cognitive theories as it frequently showed up in my research in online learning and motivation. In addition, I was directed by Professor Su to be sure and connect prescriptive theory to my work, including David Merril’s First Principles of Instruction, which is particularly suited to teaching technology online.
